Story of a trash bin

When you throw your trash into a bin in a fast-food restaurant, you probably won't pay that much attention to it, because the trash bin is, well, just a trash bin.

Trash bins can have a significant impact on the fast-food restaurant's efficiency. If the trash bins are poorly designed, it can be difficult for staff to do the actual cleaning and restaurant start to look less welcoming. Over the years we have successfully developed our trash bins together with our client Hesburger (Finnish fast-food chain) to be more than just trash bins. Our waste management furniture are durable and decrease the time needed for cleaning. The design is possible to customize according to brand owners specifications.

Standard solutions & easy to use

Problem: Sometimes trash bags have different size or staff must use different keys to open different trash bins and ash tray door locks, causing frustration and loss of time, every day. Texts are written in different languages for different countries, so there is many variations of same item causing additional productions costs.
Solution: Many of our trash bins don’t require assembling, we provide “ready to use solutions”. We have simulated best practices, how to clean fast and there is no longer a need to design new local solutions. We have changed texts into symbols that are understandable in all countries.

Cleaning made easy

Problem: In many cases, when it’s time to empty the bin, the trash surely is inside the bin, but it is also everywhere around the inner bin. The simple task of emptying the trash bin may end up as an intensive long-lasting cleaning session.
Solution: We have designed the trash bin structure so that the plastic bin can only be positioned at the right place, not the wrong place. This ensures that all trash ends up in the bin, not around it. Durable shelf structure has three functions:

Gives stability to the cabinet
Steer the inner bin to the right position
Has a function to store plastic trash bins, near and easy to find for any co-worker

Scalability and modular design

Problem: The restaurant chain had to customize the trash bin in size and localize instructions to each country due to translations.
Solution: We use only guiding symbols and pictures on both our trash bins and in the furniture packages and instructions. We create consistent and modular design. This way the same design and trash bin measurements fit floor plans and can be used across all locations. The use of symbols also enables smart warehousing and the same trash bin always fits different markets.

Better function

Problem: The liquid bin was difficult to empty and the lid was not easy to put back on the right place.

Solution: We designed a drawer instead of a bin.
